多分一回では無理だと思うので、今回は前半となると思います。

スコット・マクナイトがこの本を高く評価しているのはご存知のとおり。序言を書いていますし、ベイツの研究がマクナイト（もちろんその前にN.T.ライト）の「『福音』とは何か」の新約聖書学的探求を受けてのものだからです。

つまり「信仰とは何か」の前に「福音とは何か」が問われるべきなのです。そしてその流れの中で「義認」が問われ、「キリストとの合体（union with Christ）」が問われ、「救いの順序（オルド・サリューティス）」 や救済論の位置付けが問われるべきなのだと思います。

Ⅰ.　問いを枠付けるのは福音

ベイツがSBAAで「信仰」をあらためて問い直し、その中心的な意味を「アリージャンス（忠誠）」と捉え直すのは、すなわち「福音」が新約聖書においてどのようなものとして捉えられているか、という問いに基づいているわけです。
「信仰」とはその「福音」に対する応答だからです。

It all depends on how the gospel is framed. Is it about how to go to heaven when you die? About being released from guilt? About liberation from some kind of (spiritual or social) slavery? Let this be said over and over: How we frame the gospel determines what the response is.

Ⅱ.　「痩せた福音（truncated gospel）」の問題
　いわゆる「矮小化された福音」、マクナイトが『福音の再発見』で問題にした「罪の処理に特化した福音提示」の問題、などがそうです。
 
Ⅲ.　福音

… the gospel is the power-releasing story of Jesus’s life, death for sins, resurrection, and installation as king, but that story only makes sense in the wider framework of the stories of Israel and creation. The gospel is not in the first instance a story about heaven, hell, making a decision, raising your hand after praying a certain prayer, justification by faith alone, trusting that Jesus’s righteousness is sufficient, or any putative human tendencies toward self-salvation through good works. It is, in the final analysis, most succinctly good news about the enthronement of Jesus the atoning king as he brings these wider stories to a climax (30).

Ⅳ.　（この）福音への応答: Allegiance to the Enthroned King

Ⅴ.　信仰/アリージャンスの三要素
　アリージャンスが「信仰（ピスティス）」 のすべての意味、というわけではなく、様々なニュアンス（信頼、忠実、信仰/ビリーフ、etc.）を「王となられたイエスへの忠誠」が大きく包み込むような形。

1. Mental affirmation/intellectual agreement: certain enough to yield.
2. Professed fealty to Jesus as Lord (Rom 10:9-10).
3. Enacted loyalty to the king, as in the obedience of faith.

“If we remember that the allegiance concept welds mental agreement, professed fealty, and embodied loyalty, foregrounding allegiance makes excellent contextual sense in all of these crucial passages” (82).
