The Founder of Christianity, Paul or Jesus?

Who Founded Christianity: Jesus or Paul?

GJM: Who really was the founder of Christianity? Was it Paul or Jesus of Nazareth? Where does the evidence point?

DW: Of course, it was Jesus! Paul saw himself as a ‘slave’ of Jesus Christ, and the idea of Paul founding Christianity makes no sense at all: it was a vibrant growing movement before he ever joined it; indeed that is why he tried to eliminate the movement. And after his conversion he was in no position to turn Christianity into a new religion, even if he had wanted to, since he was an outsider not at all involved in the Jerusalem leadership of the church. But he would not have wanted to change Jesus’ religion, because he discovered its truth on the Damascus Road and was personally overwhelmed by the love of Jesus.

Who Founded Christianity: Jesus or Paul?
http://www.beliefnet.com/Faiths/Christianity/2004/04/Who-Founded-Christianity-Jesus-Or-Paul.aspx

What Saint Paul Really Said: Was Paul of Tarsus the Real Founder of Christianity? (1996)

Paul and The Faithfulness of Godの書評をブログ等で展開している方々のものをちょこっとずつ紹介している。

Tom is not merely a global thinker, he is a longitudinal thinker and in most major things he has not changed his mind much in the last two decades and so he can say things like this and mean them. Not many persons, including not many scholars, have that degree of orderly sequential mental processes and convictions over such a long stretch of time.

Paul and The Faithfulness of Godの書評まで行かないけど、ちょっと面白い読み物。

Wright's Wit

That, I propose, is how we should read 11.26a; kai houtōs pas Israēl sōthēsetai, ‘and in this way “all Israel shall be saved”‘. At this point an exegete arguing my present case may well feel like Paul as he quotes Elijah; ‘I’m the only one left!’ It is not true, of course. There may not be seven thousand, but there might be seven or more out there who have not . . . well, perhaps we had better not complete that sentence. (p. 1239)

The result is a “Pauline theology” unlike any we’ve seen before—and a long, complex, at times repetitive book that’s extraordinarily difficult to review. (What possessed me to agree to do this? I asked myself more than once!)
In an attempt to tame the monster, I’ll focus somewhat narrowly on Wright’s overall method and on key elements in his outline of Paul’s theology.
...I want to express my gratitude to Wright for what he’s done in these volumes. The astonishing scope of this work, as Wright “locates” Paul’s theology within his first-century world, is a breath of fresh air in an environment in which academics learn more and more about less and less—until they know everything about nothing. Wright’s resolute concern to make sense of Paul in his historical context—a fundamental value that pervades all his work and which, he suggests, is the essence of the “new perspective on Paul” (460)—is a virtue in his work that hasn’t always been sufficiently appreciated by evangelicals.

With the possible exception of the significance of the “return to Zion” theme and Messiah as an incorporative idea in Paul, I find Wright’s chapter on Paul’s redefinition of God to be compelling.

I strongly endorse Wright’s clear and convincing case for a strictly forensic sense of justification against those who would expand the concept to include transformation or (the more recent buzz word) “theosis” (956-59).

EVANGELICAL THEOLOGY

The gospel preaching in the NT nowhere makes explicit that Jesus is a divine person, coequal with the Father in being from all eternity, sharing in one divine substance.
What the gospel does make clear is that the epochal saving action of God is executed in his Son in such an intense way that the identity of God must now be (re)defined in light of the mission of the messianic Son. The gospel is a story about God, and the story within the story is Jesus the Messiah. In our God-storied gospel, Jesus is not a human being who was commissioned to speak and act on behalf of God; rather, Jesus speaks and acts from a viewpoint that represents God from the inside (460).

This says a whole lot, I have to admit, and it changes the discussion from “Is Jesus God?” to “How is Jesus God?” Bird then sketches the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed and the Reformation discussions, but pulls us back to two NT facts: Jesus is Lord and the identification of this Lord with Israel’s God. The fact of the incarnation, not the content, is the presupposition of NT theology. I do think he could have focused more on this “identity” issue more, but I see this chp as a step forward in our deity-of-Christ discussions. It’s Reformed orthodoxy revised by Bauckham and NT Wright.
